Microsoft Windows 7
The prices for the various versions of Windows 7 vary slightly, with Amazon having better-than-retail prices (as always). But, what many people don't know is that there's a specially priced package that allows you to upgrade 3 PCs to Windows Home Premium for less than the cost of buying two upgrade programs.
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Family Pack (3-User) can upgrade systems from either XP or Vista. Anyone running Vista can use the "upgrade" feature to install Windows 7 and enjoy its new features. Those currently running XP can purchase any upgrade package, but will have to use the "full install" feature which means wiping off the old operating system and doing a fresh install. This package was only $149 initially, but the prices vary depending on where you purchase. It's still less than buying three individual upgrade packages. And, the 3-pack may not be available forever, so purchase now if you want to save money and upgrade at your leisure. Check the Software and Books link for the current Amazon price which is typically less than the MSRP.
If you're getting close to the point where you need a new PC consider purchasing one now and get the new operating system preinstalled. That will save you upgrade or install hassles and the cost of the upgrade package.
There are several upgrade packages and books listed on the Software and Books section of this web site. Check them out to get started on the new generation of operating systems.
Discount Postage
It's no secret that the postage rates are rising out of control and forcing many people to discover new ways to pay bills and communicate with friends and associates. Online bill pay services have been available for years, but some people are just now getting on the band wagon.
It does seem to be a secret, however that the postage rates continue to go up every year. For the new prices effective May 2011 check here.
Postal workers
recommend that patrons purchase the Forever stamp that can be used
forever, no matter what the current first class postage happens to be. The current cost of this stamp at the post office or other outlets is
44 cents. However, if purchased from Amazon the stamp costs 41 cents in sheets of
20 stamps for a total of $10.50 (and shipping is free). Run, don't walk to this sitenow and
purchase your stamps.
Another way to save on postage is to use the usps.com website to prepare labels and postage for your packages. The cost of sending a package is usually less this way than it would be if you purchased postage at the post office. First Class mail often gives the best discount. Other services yield smaller savings, but you might save on gas if you don't have to go to a post office.
